The streets of Brisbane and Townsville were buzzing with energy in March and April as thousands of participants laced up their running shoes for Run Army 2026. Among the crowd were Queensland SES volunteers, who not only ran and walked, but were up early to support the event.
Now in its sixth year, this year’s Run Army was another successful event, with 1085 individuals choosing the Queensland SES Gift Fund as their fundraising cause. More than $12,500 was raised to support the vital work SES volunteers do in communities across Queensland.
A special mention goes to the top five fundraisers, whose efforts were truly inspiring:
- Leonora: $1475 (#10 overall)
- Stefanie: $1020 (#17 overall)
- Alanna: $520
- Bruce: $435
- Ava: $435.
Their dedication and commitment to the cause have made a real difference. Thank you!

SES volunteers: supporting Run Army every step of the way
Queensland SES volunteers played a key role in the success of Run Army 2026, contributing their time and energy both on and off the course. The SES Brisbane and Northern Regions were instrumental in supporting the live events, taking on key responsibilities such as crewing aid stations, course marshalling and engaging with the community.
In Townsville, more than 3200 people participated, making it the largest Run Army event the city has ever seen. Meanwhile, in Brisbane, 9000 participants brought their enthusiasm and determination, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. And for those unable to travel to Brisbane or Townsville, around 2000 participants competed virtually. Whether running, walking, volunteering or cheering from the sidelines, the collective effort of everyone involved highlighted the incredible community spirit that defines Queensland.
For many SES volunteers, the event was an opportunity to give back to the community in a different way.
Wendy, a volunteer with the SES for four-years, shared her thoughts on the day:
“Just seeing all the happy faces was my favourite part of the event. I wasn't prepared for the volume of people. It was so impressive. It's always so nice to engage with people who are so happy to see you.”
Fleur, another SES volunteer who supported their first Run Army event, echoed this sentiment:
“Everyone was so thankful we were there. It’s really good to get out and volunteer at events like this. We had a lot of people coming past and saying ‘thank you’ for what we do, which was really nice.”
Reflecting on the event, Kerri, a volunteer from Townsville, shared:
“One of my favourite memories was seeing everyone come together and support each other throughout the event. The atmosphere was really positive and encouraging, and it was great seeing the community, emergency services and participants all connecting in such a meaningful way. It was a great turnout, and I will definitely do it again next year.”

Reflections from the day
Queensland SES Chief Officer Dr Mark Armstrong, CSC also took part in the Brisbane event, both running and fundraising. Reflecting on the day, he said:
“Run Army is an incredible experience that truly showcases the strength of our community. I’m immensely proud of our SES volunteers who not only gave their time and energy to support the event but also represented the SES with such enthusiasm and dedication. It’s events like these that remind us of the power of teamwork and the importance of giving back.”
Kerri, who has been volunteering with the SES for two-years, echoed this sentiment:
“Being able to represent the SES reminds me how important volunteering and community service are. It’s rewarding to be part of an organisation that people trust and rely on.”
For Fleur, who has been volunteering with the SES for 4.5 years, the event was another reminder of why she joined the organisation in the first place.
“I remember during the 2011 floods, I felt so hopeless. When my kids got older and I had more time, I decided to join the SES. It’s been such a rewarding experience, and events like this are a great way to give back and connect with the community.”
